The Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng) in Petroleum Engineering is a five year program of study with a strong foundation in Mathematics, Physics and Geology established during the first two years. In later years the emphasis is divided between the technical aspects of Petroleum Engineering, namely: Drilling, Reservoir Characterization, Rock Properties and Geosciences, and  Management Skills which include, Economics, Risk Evaluation and Decision-Making. The Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering has the following objectives:

1.    To produce top-tier professionally competent graduates to work both in the private and public sectors of the economy,
2.    To produce petroleum engineers that are capable of initiating and carrying out engineering designs and studies,
3.    To produce graduates equipped to participate in the management of industrial production operations,
4.    To produce graduates that are strongly inclined towards research and development activities.


The Department of Petroleum Engineering came into existence in October 2011 when the College of Technology (COT) was established. Its emergence was midwifed by  the College of Science from 2009 when the pioneer students were admitted into the Petroleum & Natural Gas Engineering programme until October 2011 when the department was fully created.


• Over the years, student enrolment into the department has grown from 31 students in 2009 to its present population of 462.
• The department went through the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise and obtained full accreditation in 2017. Prior to this time it was granted interim accreditation in 2014.
• The Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) also granted full accreditation to the department in 2017 having been on interim accreditation since 2014.
• In the 2013/2014 session, the department produced its first set of graduates. Four sets of graduates have been produced since the inception of the department till date.
• In 2014, the Drilling Engineering, Production/Reservoir Engineering laboratories were built and laboratory equipment installed and tested mainly by the departmental staff.  
• In the 2012/2013 session, FUPRE student chapter of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) was established and got recognized by the SPE International headquarters in Richardson, Texas, USA.
